What do you need in order to get a driving permit?

TeenCalifornia requires that any person under the age of 18 must complete a Drivers Education Course.

We have online courses in Drivers Education. For more information on these classes click the link for online courses.

In addition to the completion of Drivers Education, the DMV also requires that each student show proof of enrollment in a behind-the-wheel Drivers Training program.

The Driver Training course is 6 hours of training behind the wheel with a licensed instructor. We schedule 3 appointments for 2 hours each. The instructor will pick you up at home, school or work and teach you all of the basics of operating a vehicle safely and legally. Your fee will be paid upon enrollment for Behind the Wheel classes. At the end of the 6 hours, you will receive a Certificate of Completion in Drivers Training.

In order to take the driving test and get your license, you must have completed both Drivers Education and Driver Training. And, you must practice with a licensed adult 25 year or older for 6 months from the date of issue of your permit.  You must be 15 ½ years old to take the written test to get a permit and 16 years old to get your license.
